How To Get Melons In Minecraft

There are many different ways to set up a Minecraft melon farm. Here’s a simple melon farm design.

1. Find Or Place Down Water

First we need to find a small body of water or create our own. In our example, we simply dug a hole 5 blocks long and filled it with water.

2. Use Your Hoe

Next, pick a hoe on your Hotbar and prepare the soil around the water. You can hoe with the following controls on your game controller:

Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition – Right click on the block.
Pocket Edition (PE): Tap the block.
Xbox 360, Xbox One: Press the LT button.
PS3, PS4: Press the L2 button.
Wii U, Nintendo Switch: Press the ZL button.

Once you have used the hoe and removed the top layer of soil from the farmland, you will notice that the blocks have turned brown. Now they are ready to plant.

3. Plant The Melon Seeds

Select the melon seeds in your Hotbar and plant them in the soil blocks where you used your hoe before. Plant your melon seeds with the following controls on your game controller:

Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition – Right click on the block.
Pocket Edition (PE): Tap the block.
Xbox 360, Xbox One: Press the LT button.
PS3, PS4: Press the L2 button.
Wii U, Nintendo Switch: Press the ZL button.

Once you have planted your melon seeds, you will start to see them grow. Let’s speed up that process now!

4. Fertilize The Seeds

Your melon seeds will slowly sprout in time. However, we can slightly speed that up by fertilizing the seeds with bone meal.

So, select bone meal in your Hotbar and use the following game controls to fertilize your plants:

Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition: right-click on the plant.
Pocket Edition (PE): tap on the plant.
Xbox 360, Xbox One: press the LT button.
PS3, PS4: press the L2 button.
Wii U, Nintendo Switch: press the ZL button.

As you use the bone meal, you will notice that the melon stems grow. This won’t make your melons grow completely like other foods, but it will make the stem grow faster.

Over time you will notice that a fully developed melon block is attached to each stem. Keep in mind that you need to make sure there is a block of soil or grass next to the stem for the melon to appear.

Now you have melons! You should harvest your cantaloupes so that the melon stems grow longer.

The same process is used if you want to start a pumpkin farm as well.

Right click either a dirt or grass block while holding a hoe, the land will instantly turn into farmland, which is what we need to plant seeds. Once you have a row of farmland, plant a seed in each farmland block by right clicking it while holding a melon or pumpkin seed.
