Steps To Tame And Ride A Horse
1. Find A Horse
First, you have to find a horse. They are commonly found in the Plains biome of Minecraft. If you can’t find one, you can summon a horse or use a horse spawn egg.
2. Tame The Horse
Once you’ve found a horse, you can tame it by riding it repeatedly. Ride a horse with:
- Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition – Right-click on the horse.
- Pocket Edition (PE): Move the pointer over the horse and press the Ride button.
- Xbox 360, Xbox One: Press the LT Button
- PS3, PS4: Press L2 Button
- Wii U, Nintendo Switch: Press the ZL Button
The horse will push you repeatedly, so you will have to keep trying to ride it. The time it takes to tame a horse in Minecraft varies: sometimes you have to ride it several times, sometimes you only have to ride it once.
When the horse is finally tamed, you will notice that hearts appear around it and it will no longer confuse you.
You will also notice that although you can sit on the horse, you cannot ride it. To do this, we need to attach a saddle to the horse.
3. Put Saddle On The Horse
Mount the horse first, then select a saddle from your quick access bar using:
- Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition: Press ‘E’ to access the inventory.
- Pocket Edition (PE) – Tap the 3-dot button to access your inventory, then tap the saddle button.
- Xbox 360, Xbox One – Press the Y button to open your inventory.
- PS3, PS4: Press the triangle button to open your inventory.
- Wii U, Nintendo Switch: Press the X button to access your inventory.
Drag the saddle from the Inventory section to the saddle box to the left of the horse image. You can also drag the horse harness up. The image of the horse needs to be updated to show a horse with a saddle.
Go back to the game and you will notice that your horse is now wearing a saddle.
4. Ride The Horse
Now let’s learn how to ride a horse in Minecraft! First, we need to mount the horse with the following controls:

- PS3, PS4: Press L2 Button
- Wii U, Nintendo Switch: Press the ZL Button
Once on the tamed horse, you can control it using the same controls you would use to move your character. You can change the camera view if you want to see yourself riding a horse and you can jump up and down with the horse.
To get off the horse, the controls are:
- Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition: Press the left Shift key.
