How To Grow Sugar Cane In Minecraft

1. Find Or Place Down Water

First we need to find a small body of water or create our own. In our example, we dug a 6-block hole and filled it with water.

2. Plant The Sugar Cane

Select the sugar canes in your Hotbar and plant them in the blocks of grass (or soil or sand) right next to the water. Plant the sugar cane using the following controls on your game controller:

  • Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition – Right click on the block.
  • Pocket Edition (PE): Tap the block.
  • Xbox 360, Xbox One: Press the LT button.
  • PS3, PS4: Press the L2 button.
  • Wii U, Nintendo Switch: Press the ZL button.

Once you have planted the sugar cane, you will start to see it grow. We can speed up that process by using fertilizers!

3. Fertilize The Sugar Cane

Your sugar cane will grow slowly over time. However, we can speed it up by fertilizing the plants with bone meal (Bedrock and Legacy editions only).

Select bone meal on your Hotbar and use the following in-game controls to fertilize your sugarcane plants:

  • Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition – Right click on the sugar cane.
  • Pocket Edition (PE): Tap the sugar cane.
  • Xbox 360, Xbox One: Press the LT button.
  • PS3, PS4: Press the L2 button.
  • Wii U, Nintendo Switch: Press the ZL Button

If you use the bone meal, you will notice that the plants grow up to 3 blocks high. Once your sugar cane plantation is fully developed, we can harvest the plant.

4. Harvest The Sugar Cane

Lastly, we will want to harvest the crop. To do this, you simply break the sugar cane using the following controls on your game controller:

  • Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition: left-click on the plant.
  • Pocket Edition (PE): tap on the plant and hold.
  • Xbox 360, Xbox One: press the RT button.
  • PS3, PS4: press the R2 button.
  • Wii U, Nintendo Switch: press the ZR button.

Tip – Break the second block, leaving the 1st block untouched. This will allow you to harvest the crop without having to replant it, so it will continue to grow.

And that’s it! Minecraft sugar cane is an important item that is used to make paper and make sugar. It can also allow you to move normally and breathe underwater if it’s two blocks in height.

FAQ’s

1. What is the best way to grow sugar cane in Minecraft?

To plant sugar cane, put just one block of it in one block of dirt or sand next to still water by right clicking the dirt or sand block. When farming sugar cane, you can just let the sugar cane grow, and when it grows taller than 1 block high, break the second block.

2. How long does it take to grow sugar cane in Minecraft?

18 minutes
On average, sugar cane will grow 1 block every 18 minutes. Sugar cane’s growth rate is unaffected by the absence of light. Sugar cane can naturally grow up to 3 blocks in height. This limit can be bypassed by placing additional plants on top of an existing one but it will still not grow naturally any further.

3. Why is my sugarcane not growing?

Sugar cane cannot be grown on Farmland. Instead, it has to be placed on a Grass, Dirt, Sand, or Red Sand block that is adjacent to water. It can spawn on Gravel but can’t be placed on it. It will not grow on a block that is not next to water.

4. Do sugar canes grow faster on sand?

It will grow faster than wheat, as while wheat grows in stages, sugar cane will just grow another sugar cane block. Sugar cane grows at the same speed on either dirt and sand.

5. Why does sugarcane grow slow in Minecraft?

Also, remember to stay within 64 blocks of the sugar canes, which is essential for their growth in the game. Wandering off too far will result in the sugar cane not growing at all. This is why you need to make sure that you stay within the specified rang.

6. Can sugar cane grow underground in Minecraft?

It is impossible to plant and farm crops on any other material block (excluding mushrooms, sugarcane, and cactus). As long as the conditions are appropriate, crops can be farmed both above land and underground as long as they are planted on dirt blocks.
